That, however, was before gasoline hit $4 a gallon

wooed by its irresistibly low-priced gasoline--around

And while there he picked up some six-packs of Tecate

is "our advantage."
Mr. Terrazas is among a flow of American "gas
tourists" who account for a 50 percent surge in
gasoline sales at Mexican service stations over
the last several months.
Even the Mexico Tourism Board is promoting the
journey across the border.
Many South Texans are buying all the fuel they can
south of the border.
One Texan in the trucking industry said he saved
$12,000 a month by fueling his four-truck fleet in
Mexico.
The low gasoline and diesel prices that draw
Americans here are a result of subsidies provided by
the Mexican government to curb inflation and
make fuel affordable to the poor.
The moment may not last.
Experts question how long the government can continue
providing gasoline subsidies, which will amount to
more than $20 billion this year.
For gas station attendants in Mexico, who earn $100 a
week, the surge in sales has meant extra money to
tuck into the pockets of their olive green overalls.
To tip attendants is the custom here and one of them,
flashing a brick-size wad of pesos and dollars,
said, "Americans tip better."

Once you become accustomed to gas at $4 a gallon,
brace yourself for the next shock: bananas reaching $1 a pound.
The reasons for the price increase are the rising
cost of oil and reduced supply caused by floods in
Ecuador, the world's biggest banana exporter.
It is astonishing that bananas have long been the
cheapest fruit at the grocery store.
Americans eat as many bananas as apples and oranges
combined, which is especially amazing when you
consider that not so long ago, bananas were virtually
unknown here.
They're grown thousands of miles away, they must be
transported in cooled containers and even then they
survive no more than two weeks after they're cut off
the tree.
They became a staple only after the men, who in the
late 19th century founded the United Fruit Company,
figured out how to get bananas to American tables
quickly.
The banana barons also marketed their product in ways
that never occurred to farmers or grocers before, by
offering discount coupons, writing jingles and
placing bananas in schoolbooks and on picture
postcards.
Once bananas had become widely popular, the companies
kept costs low by exercising iron-fisted control over
the Latin American countries where the fruit was
grown.
Workers could not be allowed such basic rights as
health care, decent wages or the right to congregate.
Governments could not be anything but utterly pliable.
Over and over, banana companies, aided by the
American military, intervened whenever there was a
chance that any "banana republic" might end its
cooperation.
In 1954, United Fruit helped arrange the overthrow of
the democratically elected government of Guatemala.
In recent years, consumers have begun seeing benefits
to health, to the economy and to the environment of
buying foods that are grown close to their homes.
But getting used to life without bananas will take

summer running camp in Pennsylvania.
During a routine six-mile run, I stumbled, and a
coach stopped me and asked me if I was okay.
"I'm fine,"I assured him, and kept running.
But I wasn't fine.
By the end of the run I had collapsed with heatstroke
and had fallen unconscious.
The athletic trainers quickly submerged me in a tub
of ice to lower my body temperature, and I spent the
next week in a hospital, lucky to be alive.
Later my coach visited me, angry at himself for
letting me continue my run.
But I had no memory of our earlier exchange.
Athletic researchers say one of the most frustrating
aspects of heat illness is that the sufferer is often
completely unaware of his or her own symptoms.
If a problem with heat illness is suspected, asking
someone if they are okay is not enough.
In addition to high body temperature, the obvious
signs of heat illness are red, hot and dry skin with
little or no sweating, as well as a rapid strong
pulse.
A person with heat illness may start stumbling or
appear less coordinated than usual.
Ask the person if he or she has a headache, nausea or
dizziness.
Talk to them about a variety of topics to see if they
exhibit symptoms of confusion.
If you suspect a person is having a problem with the
heat, err on the side of caution and insist they get
into shade and cool down.
Have them drink water and spray their body with cold
water or rub them down with ice or a cold cloth.
If they don't cool down quickly, seek medical advice.

The average cost of an airline ticket in the United
States was up 10 percent in March compared with a
year ago.
It's no wonder that a lot of travelers are talking
about just staying home this summer.
Here are some strategies to help keep your costs
down:
1. Book directly with the airline.
Airlines have begun to guarantee equal or better
prices to travelers who book with them directly.
This helps drive traffic to their sites and save on
commission expenses they would otherwise pay to third-
party booking sites like Orbitz or Expedia.
2. Sign up for private price cuts.
Airlines quietly offer special coupon codes to
travelers who sign up for their weekly newsletters or
frequent flier programs.
The downside to this strategy is you'll get a lot of
extra e-mails, but given the savings, it's worth it.
3. Make your computer do the work
If you don't have the time or inclination to sift
through dozens of airline newsletters for deals, you
can sign up for fare alerts.
Nearly every online travel site these days, including
Travelocity.com, Kayak.com, Orbitz.com or Expedia.com
offers its own version and some airlines, including
American, Southwest and WestJet, a Canadian airline,
offer their own deal-alert software.
4. Search for flights at alternative airports
Depending on the distance from your home to the
airport, using smaller, regional airports can
sometimes mean substantial savings of up to 30%!
5. Be flexible
You can often save by adjusting your travel dates by
a day or two.
Travel sites like Travelocity.com or Zuji.com offer
flexible date searches that show the lowest airfare
for your route as much as four months out.
6. Don't wait if you see a deal
If you see an airfare and it looks good to you, don't
shop --buy.
It may not be there tomorrow.
