京都国立博物館の「京都御所障壁画」展は新春らしいおめでたさ。片山東熊設計の旧館は、19世紀の花の御所の世界を映すのにこれ以上は望めないだろう。展示されたふすま絵は大変な数で見ごたえがある。もともと京都御所内にはしつらえを飾る絵が1800面も存在し、今回の展覧会はそのごく一部であるそうだが、それでも200点とは途中で見疲れてしまったくらいだ。ふすま絵というのは、当然といえば当然だが、それぞれ部屋の使われ方に合わせて絵の主題に決まりごとがあって、例えば玉座の間には、天子たるものいかに国を治めるべきかを説くような帝王学の故事と永代までの繁栄を願う鳳凰の絵が描かれ、天皇が和歌や漢詩を詠む御学問所には山水に遊びながら書・詩歌・絵画をたしなむ中国の教養人の絵など、中国の故事にならった主題が主に描かれている。こうした宮廷画の特徴は、黒い輪郭線をばっちり描き、自然や人のたたずまいも説明的で、かつ、贅沢に使った顔料の彩りは儀礼的。見た目のクールビューティーが現代人にもわかる琳派など市井の流派とは明らかに違う美意識。しかしですね、ふすま絵というのが、四辺を考慮した構図にのせて、ある物語世界で部屋を満たし、それが次の間、そのまた次へと引き継いでいき、クライマックスに向かってイメージを畳み掛けていく様子がわかってくると、それが天皇の権威付けの装置であっても、俄然興味が沸いてきます。それは博物館内で上映していたビデオによって教えられて初めてわかりましたが、ふすま絵を部屋から外すと意味が半減するんですね。

The Old School and the Museum / pirikainankle

The old modern architecture should become a museum. I got convinced of it when I visited the Kyoto international Manga museum at the Karasuma Oike street. It's probably one of the greatest archive of Japanese manga collection, they say they keep two hundred thousand copies of old and new manga works in a renovation of a closed elementary school. The school used to be in the most prosperous area of the textile industry in Kyoto so I was impressed with the robust construction and exquisite furnishings. I suppose this dignity is a key thing to appeal the excitement in a museum. Visitors can look and read through the copies as they like without fussy application if only paying the admission fee! It was quite fun to see people taking a copy from the shelves along the corridor, leaning on a wall or sitting on a stair, reading quite keenly. It's a great living time capsule of the people's dream.
レトロモダンな建物は博物館がふさわしい。烏丸御池の京都国際マンガミュージアムに行ってそんなふうに思った。この博物館は新旧20万点のマンガを所蔵しているそうで、それが廃校になった昔の小学校をリノベーションして開館となった。ここらはかつての織物産業で栄えた京都有数の場所柄なので、構造が堅固だし見事な室内装飾もすばらしい。思いますに博物館の興奮を味わうのには、この立派なたたずまいが肝要ではないでしょうかね。そしてそして、入場者は入場料さえはらえば面倒な手続きもとらずに好きにマンガをとって読んでいいんですよ！みんな廊下にずらりと並んだ本棚から思い思いのマンガをとって窓辺に陣取ったり階段に座り込んだりして熱心に読んでいて微笑ましい光景だった。これは庶民の夢のつまった生けるタイムカプセルじゃないかしらん。

One fine morning on Sunday, I heard bells ringings somewhere. I found it was from the Orthodox church built in 1903. I felt something odd in the sound, to be honest, because it's a complex of rapid and grave alarms in high tone. I felt it's totally defferent from the one I heard in the town of Buckingham which sounded far heavier and deeper in a harmony. I should think that the sound depends on the size of the bells and the spire (since the spire of Buckingham church was almost 35 meter high or so, so eventually they can hang bigger bells). The thing is when I heard the bells I had remembered the film called "Before the rain", a racist tragedy of Macedonia. The film shows the painful chain of the racist homicide in the absolute beauty of the orthodox church filled with gold lacquered icons and the landscape in semiarid climate. Under the clear blue sky, I felt a link between the orthodoxian exoticism connoted by the alarm bell and the cold beauty of the film.
ある晴れた日曜日の朝、どこかで鐘が鳴っていて、それは京都ハリストス正教会からの音だった。それが正直なにか違和感を感じる音で、ハイピッチのいかめしい不協和音といいますか、以前バッキンガムの町の教会で聞いた重くて深い調和の音と全然違う（もっともそれは鐘と尖塔のサイズで決まると考えるべきなのかもしれない、バッキンガム教会の尖塔は35mくらいあるらしいから）。しかしながらハリストス教会の鐘の音を聞いたら、なんだかマケドニアの民族対立の悲劇を描いた「ビフォア・ザ・レイン」という映画を思い出した。この映画は沈痛な民族対立の連鎖を金色のイコンに囲まれた正教会とか乾燥した草原のような風景とか圧倒的な美しさの中で描いていた。青く乾いた空の下で、ハリストス教会の早鐘の響きから正教会の伝える非西洋性と映画で感じた凍った美しさがつながるように思った。

Visited the Hiyoshitaisha shrine in Sakamoto Shiga. It's on the East side of the mount Hiei which is the highest holy place with the Enyakuji buddhist temple in Kyoto. The shrine is on the edge between the settlement and the mountain, and a clear stream is running through the site. It seems that this stream has something to do with the sanctity of the mountain god, and the water is windingly running between temples. It's sometimes a cascade linking those buildings and sometimes a rectangle channel showing the purification of the territory, and pouring into the valley through the forest. 
Sakamoto is also known for the retreat of buddist monks after retirement from the Enryakuji. There remain several hermit temples and all of them are surrounded by beautiful stone walls called "Anoushu zumi". Anoush zumi is a way of building a wall with naturally hewed-out stones.
滋賀の坂本にある日吉大社へ行った。頂上の延暦寺で知られる比叡山の滋賀県側、つまり東側にあって、山と集落の境界上に位置し、清冽な谷川が神域を通り抜ける。この清水がきっと山の神様の神聖さの起源になっているみたいで、蛇行しながらそれぞれの祠の間をすり抜ける。
例えば、社と社の間を滝になって仲立ちしたり、かぎ型の水路になって社のぐるりを回り込んで結界を示したり、しまいに樹冠の下の谷に流れていくのだった。それから坂本の町は延暦寺のお坊さんの隠遁所として発達したそうで、今でもいくつかの僧坊がひっそり残っている。この僧坊なんかを取り囲むのが「穴太衆積み」と呼ばれる石垣で、石を切石加工しないでそのままの形を生かして積み上げる工法なのだそうだ。

New Year's eve I went to the Minamiza theatre to see Mozart's "Magic flute" by New York Metropolitan theatre. It was "live viewing" in which you see the vision of live performance transmitted from New York to Kyoto, so it's not exactly simultaneous, but a bit defferent from the movie. Minamiza is one of the most gorgeous commercial theatre built in 1929 furnishing in the japanesque style in Kyoto and I enjoyed the gorgeous atmosphere. It was the first time to see the opera for me Metropolitan's magic flute was a fabulous piece of dazzling entertainment.
大晦日に南座へ。ニューヨーク・メトロポリタン劇場のモーツアルト「魔笛」を観にいった。これは「ライブ・ビューイング」といってニューヨークから京都にライブ映像を伝送するという。同時中継でもないのだけど映画とも違う。南座は1929年に建てられた京都有数のじゃぱねすくごーじゃす商業劇場なので、オペラとも相性よく雰囲気ばっちり。オペラを観るのは初めてだったけど、メトロポリタンの魔笛はエンターテイメントに徹してキラキラと楽しかったあるね。

This is a decoration for New Year's treat at Eirakuya grocery on Shijo Kawaramachi street. I love this Japanese food shop, they are sophisticated and polite and one morning I was impressed when they treated me with a cup of tea in return for my buying a gift box. A few days before the New Year, everyone looks restless and excited for the arrangement. Wishing upon the coming year 2007.
四条河原町角の永楽屋さんで、お年始のおめでたいかまぼこなどを売り出し。乾物と干菓子の店だけど、いつも丁寧で洗練されていて、ある朝、ちょっとしたギフト用のお買い物をした時に、お茶とお菓子を出してくれて感動したこともあります。この日は新年の数日前。みんな準備にそわそわして心ここにあらずです。2007年に向けて新たな思いを。

I found a web colony of moss on a pedestrian walk. Doesn't it look like a musical note, does it? What music would it be if John Cage played?
Also I found splendid autumn maple trees at the court of domestic relations in Shimogamo. I suppose it occupies quite a substantial part of Tadasunomori forest and I took a picture from outside. I see it's a bit pity that the place seems to be rigidly exclusive. I know it's a delicate issue with the adolescent privacy. But maybe or not it would be solved by flow planning and generous heart. What do you say?
舗道で網目状に広がるコケがおもしろかったので写真に撮った。楽譜みたいで、ジョン・ケージが弾きそうだね。
下鴨の家庭裁判所は紅葉したモミジの森になっていた。ここは糺の森のかなりの部分を占めていると思う。外から写真を撮ったのだけども、すてきなところなのに誰も入れない排他的な雰囲気が残念と思う。確かに若者のプライバシーとかデリケートな問題かもだけど、動線と心意気で解決できるかも。だめかな？？

Chilly Winter North Temple / pirikainankle

Visited the Jissoin temple up norh in Kyoto. It's well known for the historic architecture bequeathes the empress residence about three hundres years ago. I was desperate to see "yukamomiji", a burnished black wooden floor facing outward to the garden and reflecting the maple foliage. A bit late for the autumn leaves, but still it was beautiful. Mind you, you only can see it from a bit distance because they ask visitors to keep off the floor, also you cannot take a photo. Only I can do for you is just showing these here. A man was raking on a stone garden, and I was watching him draw a a circle around the stone. The garden doesn't seem to be a historically established but I was impressed with his devotion which dramatically brings a garden cosmos into sight.
京都の北、岩倉の実相院へ。約300年前の東山天皇中宮の御所を譲り受けた建築として知られる門跡寺院である。ぜひとも「床もみじ」を見たいと思って訪ねてみた。庭に向いて敷かれた床が黒光りしてモミジを映し出すというので有名なのだそうだ。もう紅葉にはやや遅い時期ではあったけれど、それでもまだとても綺麗だった。残念ながら参拝者はその床に近づくことはできず、やや遠めに観るのみで、また写真撮影も禁じられている。そんなわけでここにある写真が精一杯なのです。石庭では、お寺の人が熊手でかいていて、その人が石の周りを丸く取り囲むところを見ていた。ここの石庭は特に歴史的意義を伝えるものではないようだったけれども、この「丸」を描くことで一瞬にして庭園宇宙が出現するように見えておもしろいなと思った。

Baroque Plan in Kyoto / pirikainankle

This is a carriage way to the Kyoto prefectural government office. Seeing the building in the classic style through the promenade, I finally came upon an idea that the approach is based on an analogy to the grand axis of the french formal garden. The thing is, I suppose, you might feel something missing, a focal point at the end of the vista for asserting the grandeur, something like a gate, water, an architecutual counterpart, or a mountain. Anyway, now it's a bit pity that the promenade is quiet and partly occupied for parking on weekends. I guess it would be more exciting when you figure out how you link the promenade with the architecture in an activation program. 
京都府庁というと、ネオルネサンス式の建物として京都自慢の建物なんだけども、ということはファサードの前の並木道もフランス式庭園のようなバロック的アナロジーで作られているのかな（？）と思い至った。いや本気でフランス庭園みたく壮大な軸線を作るならば、道を見通した先にきっと門とか水盤とか対になる建物とかあるいは山とか、そういうのが必要かもしれないけれども。それでも、週末の並木道は寂しくて駐車スペースになってしまっているのは惜しいかな。この並木道を府庁の建築ともっと関連付けておもしろく活性化できてもいいのに。
